Description

Delaire Graff The Banghoek 2022 is a Stellenbosch red shaped in a classic Bordeaux-inspired style, with structure, savory detail, and aromatic lift taking priority over sheer fruit weight. The wine is built with restraint, using careful extraction and measured oak to support its shape rather than dominate it. The result is a composed, Cabernet-led style with clear South African character and a more Old World-influenced frame.

The nose opens with subtle spicy oak, cedarwood, and violet, followed by red fruit and a savory thread on the palate. Fine, integrated tannins give the wine structure without making it feel hard, while the oak adds polish and definition through a firm, dry finish. It would pair especially well with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, or mushroom-based dishes, where its savory profile and tannic structure can work naturally with the food.

Still youthful, this is a red with enough balance and grip to reward further cellaring, though it should also show well now with time in the glass or a short decant.
The grapes were hand-sorted and fermented as whole berries to preserve fruit purity and allow for gentler extraction. Basket pressing was used to maintain finesse in the tannin structure before the wine matured for 16 months in French oak barrels, 60% of them new. The oak contributes subtle spice, cedar, and structural support while allowing the fruit and savory character to remain central to the wine.
